Global TD-LTE Initiative will Boost LTE TDD

In the past, Ovum has highlighted the potential of LTE TDD on many occasions, but at the same time, it has also pointed out the various challenges it faces. In particular, the analyst firm has highlighted that the current status of the device ecosystem may negatively impact the pace of rollout. Devices are always a crucial success factor for any kind of technology, but for LTE TDD they are even more important, notes Ovum. This is largely due to the fact that most of the operators that have announced aggressive LTE TDD plans are based in emerging markets (China, India, and Russia). What this means is that low-cost devices will have to be made available quickly to serve these markets. In that sense, the creation of the Global TD-LTE Initiative at Mobile World Congress 2011 is a step in the right direction.

Competition between South Korea and Japanese Businesses in India Heats-Up

Competition between South Korean and Japanese businesses in India will likely intensify following New Delhi’s signing of a free trade agreement with Tokyo in February, says a South Korean trade body.

Japan and India have just signed a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA), which once implemented will remove 90 percent of import tariffs on both sides, according to a report by the Institute for International Trade, a think tank run by the Korea International Trade Association.

EU Renews Call for FTA with the Philippines

The European Union has renewed its call for a free trade agreement with the Philippines.

According to Guy Ledoux, head of the EU mission’s delegation to the Philippines, Manila had yet to formalise its intention to negotiate a free-trade treaty after it was proposed last year. "The ball is in the Philippines’ court," Ledoux told reporters.
